I adore our Difrax advisors. And I mean that most sincerely. It’s wonderful to have such enthusiastic and engaged professionals working for Difrax. I see it as a kind of personal support, I feel less ‘alone’. Of course, everything is relative. But sometimes you simply can’t do without an advisor.

I spent years without advisors. Too expensive. Luckily, I can now afford advisors, and it gives me great pleasure to be able to pay them. Within reason, of course. The hourly rates charged by some advisors leave me gasping with incredulity. Just how much can someone achieve in one hour? But the opposite is also true. I don’t need 24-7 expertise, but occasional words of wisdom from an expert who contributes thoughts and ideas and asks critical questions. The same can be said for the teams;...an extra pair of eyes can work wonders and exert more influence than my running commentary... and that alone is worth its weight in gold.

So how does my relationship with a Board of Advisors differ? I don’t know. It’s hard to say. How do you turn interaction into successful interaction? I once convened a meeting with 3 professionals. It was a protracted, long-winded exercise. A never-ending process of handing out and sending information...before someone knows the ins and outs of a company (‘we’ve already done X’, or ‘X is possible’), you need to turn the entire organisation on its head. I have neither the time nor the inclination; I’ve lost interest by the time a decision is (almost) reached.

That also says something about me, I don’t dispute that. I’m stubborn, I don’t have much patience and because I can see the consequences and extra work involved, I’m not really capable of listening carefully...

Equally, I’m getting increasingly frustrated by people who have an inane urge to add their ‘two cents worth’ and who want to make a viable contribution to our positioning. It’s understandable that everyone wants to do this and that’s what I pay them to do, at the end of the day...but it remains a dilemma and a battle with myself.
So I’ve decided to change tack. We’ve put together a Board of Advisors, made up of our favourite advisors. The advantage is that they already know a lot about the Difrax organisation; they’ve been shadowing our work and I’ve matched their expertise to the appropriate team.

For instance, our marketing expert Petra Blank is taking concrete steps to draw up the national and international Customer Service policy. Kim Spinder, our Commissioner of the Future, is taking a close look at our ‘fairy exposure’ on Twitter and other interactive exploits, and Rita McBrown is visiting all our factories to monitor quality. By adopting this approach, I hope that by the time I bring them together, they will have found out enough about the Difrax organisation to tackle strategic issues without us needing to send out snippets of information.
