Frequently asked questions

Which teat should I choose?

Difrax has a broad range of silicone teats. Which you choose depends not so much on the age of your baby but on how hard he or she sucks. A summary of the Difrax range of teats is given below:

Cherry/Standard soft
Prod. no. 671 Cherry/Standard small • Prod. no. 672 Cherry/Standard medium • Prod. no. 673 Cherry/Standard large

The round shape resembles the nipple and is familiar, so babies quickly get used to drinking from the bottle.

Wide Neck Cherry/Standard soft
Prod. no. 675 Wide Neck small • Prod. no. 676 Wide Neck medium • Prod. no. 678 Wide Neck large

Orthodontic teat
Prod. no. 694 Orthodontic small • Prod. no. 695 Orthodontic medium • Prod. no. 696 Orthodontic large

The Orthodontic teat is for babies who tend to swallow the wrong way and babies who suck hard. The flatter shape and hole on the top of the teat prevents the uvula being irritated.

Different sizes
Small: for normal drinkers from birth or for fast drinkers.
Medium: from 3 months or if your baby drinks too slowly from a small teat.
Large: from 3 months or if your baby drinks too slowly from a medium teat.

Variflow teat soft
674 Variflow Cherry/Standard • 677 Variflow Wide Neck

The Variflow teat allows you to control the flow of milk and how fast your baby drinks. It allows you to adjust the speed of flow to how hard your baby sucks. You can even change it during the feed. Setting 1 lets less feed through than setting 3. Start with 1 when your baby is thirsty and sucks hard and finish the feed with 3 when he is tired. Twist it until the right number is under baby’s nose. Use the specially designed Variflow ring to change settings easily.

How does the Variflow teat work?

When should I replace a teat?

Replace teats every six weeks. Pull hard on the teat for a moment to check it every day before using it. If it is damaged, replace it immediately.

My Variflow teat only has two holes. Is that how it should be?

There should be a thin split between the holes in the Variflow teat. Occasionally this may not be properly open. Turn the teat completely inside-out and the little split will open.

My baby drinks his whole bottle down too fast. What can I do about that?

To solve this problem Difrax has the orthodontic teat, which is available for the bottles with a narrow neck. This teat is especially for babies who are prone to choking and babies who suck very hard.

The orthodontic teat is different from ordinary teats because the hole is not at the end but on the top. So the milk hits the palate first, spreads out and mixes in the mouth. This means that the milk does not hit the uvula directly and irritate it, which can lead to retching and vomiting.

This teat comes in S, M and L. If the S is too small and too slow, you can switch to the M.

Your baby should spend 15 to 25 minutes over his bottle; that gives him the chance to digest the milk properly and satisfy his need to suck.

The Variflow ring is a useful aid as it allows you to control the flow of milk.
